Explanation of Measurements and Terms

Midside Sample

The midside sample is generally the accepted region for sampling individual animals.  This is midway between belly and back line and around the third rib area.

6% Index

The use of RAMPOWER Standard Indexes has become commonplace in the Merino industry.  At Stockman Stud we have assessed our current position and breeding objectives and have incorporated the 6 % Index within our current selection process.

Indexes are used to compare animals on their measurable traits relating to desired breeding objectives.  Three figures are used in the 6% index formula; Fibre Diameter (FD), Co-efficient of Variation (CV), and Greasy Fleece Weight (GFW).  If an animal has the average FD, CV and GFW of the mob being assessed it would score 100.  Any variations from the mobs averages will affect the animal’s score.  The greater score, the more consistent the animal’s figures are with achieving the desired breeding objectives.

Current 6% Index figures in the catalogue have been calculated from the FD, CV, and GFW recorded at ram shearing on 5th June 2006.

The graph below displays three alternative indexes used in the Merino industry and their long-term effect on Fleece Weight and Fibre Diameter.

The three basic options and their long-term breeding objectives are explained below:

A maintain FD and near maximum GFW gain: 3%

B moderate FD reduction and high GFW gain: 6%

C large FD reduction and small GFW gain: 12%

Micron

The mean fibre diameter of all the fibres measured.

Top

C.V.

The co-efficient of variation of fibre diameter.  It is expressed as a percentage of standard deviation and mean fibre diameter.

Figures less than 20% are desirable.  The lower the better.

C.F.

Comfort Factor.

0% of fibres above 30 micron = 100% Comfort Factor.

Above 95% - desirable

Above 98% - excellent

Comments

Measurements are influenced by the age of the sheep, the site from which the sample is taken, the length of the wool (wool growth), and nutrition.

We recommend that when selecting your rams you take these factors into consideration and combine this information with a balanced “hands-on” approach.
